“Do your job pestering the customer at the cash register or get written up.” Really?

Anyone that knows me also knows that with my many construction projects I spend a small fortune at hardware and lumber yards on a weekly basis.  By far Home Depot is my favorite.  The employees of Home Depot “get it” when it comes to customer service and I know a ton of people at the South County and Arnold by first name and they know me.

While making a recent purchase at one of the stores the cashier told me that she had to offer to me the credit card while making the purchase and also to point out the survey on the receipt for my chance to win $5000 towards Home Depot purchases.  There was a long line ahead of me and a long line behind me and I could tell this cashier was 100% focused on getting through this line to make people happier.  I used to work at Wal*Mart when I was in college and I can tell you that during Christmas season the highest form of customer service you can provide is to check-through your lines quickly and with a smile. This gal was “on it” and was certainly making people happy with her speed!

However, because she knew me and that I have checked out with her on numerous occasions she pointed out to me that she “had to” point out the survey on the receipt even if I’ve heard it a hundred times before because she had just been written up for not telling customers during the check out process?  (What the hell are they doing videoing these cashiers from some booth in the ceiling.  WTH, why don’t the spend more time looking for shop lifters.  Just saying).

Really!  Written up!  For not telling “me” who has been through the line a hundred times! Seriously?

Isn’t a cashier smart enough to make the decision on what to say and not to say based upon a relationship with a repeat client. I think y’all know where I’m going with this.  I mean, c’mon! Written up, Really?!
